Being Zoroastrian Youth in America

It's not very easy to be Zartoshti youth in America. You almost never go to the same school as other Zartoshti's, and most of the time you don't even live close enough to a Dahr-e-Mehr to be actively involved in the youth group. So, you feel left out. All of your other friends are able to take part in their own religious groups, and you feel a little lost. It's very hard to learn about and practice your religion when you don't have people your own age to discuss things with.

I know all this, because I feel it too. What most of us don't know is that there are so many things we can do to be involved. The Youth of the California Zoroastrian Center (YCZC) is getting stronger every year, so get on the mailing list! You'll be amazed at how wonderful everyone is. Never be too shy to introduce yourself, otherwise you'll miss out on meeting a lot of great people. And while YCZC holds events that are fun, they also hold discussions where you can get questions answered or just learn about being Zartoshti.

Talk to your parents! They know so much about the religion, because most of them grew up being immersed in the culture. Many of us are the first generation to live in America, but that doesn't mean that we have to be less informed about this major part of our life. Talking about Zoroastrianism is a way to not only get your questions answered, it's a way to become closer to your parents. Question your parents; they will be more than willing to talk anything out with you.

We, the youth, hold the future of our religion in our hands. Imagine, if we continue to be uninformed about our religion, what will we be able to teach our children? Understand that it is not enough to simply say that you are Zartoshti. To be aware of, believe in and practice the doctrines of the religion is what makes us a part of it. It is true that we have to work hard to be involved, but isn't it worth it?

We get to be a part of such a rich culture and such an honorable religion. Take time out of your day to keep in contact with Zartoshti friends, to research the religion, or to simply pray. BE INVOLVED is the! key, and believe me, the time you spend will reap great rewards of lifelong friendships, a better grasp of Zoroastrianism, and a fulfillment within yourself.
